Toss the Taco
Each Greek civilization (Argosians, Corinthians, Megraons, Spartans, Persians, and finally my group, Athens) was given two tacos, and one person from each group went over to a Hula Hoop on the other side of the room. They were the spotters, who would catch the taco when it fell. Only one of the groups (the Spartans) got their tacos in the Hula Hoop-two times-and they got 20 points. (I point=10 points) My group failed miserably. But then...
Second Event: How long can you Hula-Hoop?
How long can you Hula-Hoop?
Unfortunately, none of the people in my group were great at hooping. (My group members were Mike, Micali Morin, and Cara Stolz) Cara said she was decent at hooping, so she tried, and only about 7 seconds later, the Hula-Hoop was at her feet. "Told you I was good!" She said, pleased. I didn't try to say anything. From Persia came Jaycie, Ryan came from Corinth, Elizabeth from Sparta, Olivia from Megara, and Seamus from Argos. Pretty soon, 'How long can you Hula-Hoop?' had started-the competition hadn't lasted long at all for Athens. Cara's Hula-Hoop career had stopped in the first 3 seconds. All I could say was "Nice try, Cara." "Thanks!" she said, happy. Well, that made somebody happy. Lucky! Pretty soon, the only people left were Elizabeth from Sparta, and Jaycie from Persia. I cannot tell you how LONG we waited! It was probably about 6 minutes, but it felt more like a month. My ancient civs. teacher finally said to us "Okay, Jaycie, Elizabeth, we'll wait two more minutes, and if one of you fails to keep it going, then the other will be crowned winner! If not, then you will both get one point." They both survived the two minutes, so they both got one point. We, however, failed yet again. Yay us!
Third Event: Wiffle Ball Whistle!
Wiffle Ball Whistle
"Okay, everybody! In the next event, you will all be throwing this ball (she gestured to the Wiffle Ball) into that box." She nodded her head in the direction of the W.B Mason box. We all threw it, and, once again, we failed! (But that's okay. The prize wasn't that great.) Corinth won it, two times. The score? Persia: Ten; Corinth: Twenty; and Sparta: Thirty. Argos, Megara, and Athens? Zero, Zippo, Nada. But we knew we would win the next one.
Fourth Event: Tongue Twisters!
Tongue Twisters
Micali would bring home the gold, we were sure of it. Though she didn't, she came close...
There were 3 tongue twisters in a bag, and each person from each group would stand inside the Hula Hoop. My teacher would give each person 5 seconds to look over the twister they were given, and then they would be forced to say it as fast as they could three times, and if they messed up, they had to redo the sentence, while my teacher continued the timer. Rachel from Corinth got 12 seconds, and everybody else took about a minute. But Micali took only 9 seconds to say her twister. There was only problem-she messed up on her third try. I didn't even know she messed up, but of course, Jaycie just had to point out her fault. "She messed up! She messed up! Make her do it again, Mrs. Pahl!" So Mrs. Pahl made Rachel and Micali 'face off.' Rachel won, but Micali came REALLY close. So I just told her "you did a really great job, Micali!" She smiled sort of sadly, but thanked me just the same.
Fifth and Final Event: Object Remembrance!
Object Remembrance
My group was obviously failing. I didn't want to say it aloud, but it was true! Each group raced over to a box on their Hula-Hoop, and tried to memorize all the objects in the box. I can't remember what was in it exactly, but I do know that what I did was what I wasn't supposed to do. But I had no idea! So after ten seconds, we all raced back to our 'home base' and wrote down on a piece of paper what was in a box. Unfortunately, I thought I was allowed to bring back the items-but I wasn't! Micali got kinda mad, but it was cool. At least I knew what I had done wrong. But the good news was that my teacher didn't notice. We won the challenge, but so did Persia, so we lost, and Corinth, Persia and Sparta all won. It was okay though. The prize was a picture of a Greek philosopher on a ribbon. Not actually something that was crucial for survival. But the good thing was that I had learned all over again something that everyone needs to be reminded of:
